Scrap Sweater

Factory scraps as a feature, not a bug.

Step 1: Concept

Intention

A cosy fleece sweater for the colder seasons. Made from fabrics from previous seasons. But made with a pattern made for movement that minimises the size of pattern elements so more leftover material can be used.

Working with many materials and colours, the best way to experiment was to build a digital model of the sweater with a virtual representation of each fleece.

Pattern Making

Building on an ergonomic pattern, I cut the panels further so smaller scraps could be used. In total, 19 different fleeces were used.

Step 3: Production

Making

The majority is sewn together with double reinforced overlocking, and edges are finished with a cover stitch. Logos are applied via heat transfers, and the hem with cordlock is finished with metal detailing.
