AURA
Lexus LS Light Experience
Light experience for Toyota Boshoku
In February of 2021, I was part of a group project in which Toyota wanted us to create an interactive lighting experience in the door for their highest-end Lexus LS. The course objective was to develop and research a concept in the first 10 weeks and develop a testable prototype in the next 11 weeks to validate our idea properly. The core concept behind the project was to identify and create new interactions in the interior of the Lexus to enhance the driving experience and use new and less-developed light technologies to create a luxurious feeling.
My Role
In the first phase, the division of labour was equal in the research and prototyping, since there were many avenues to explore.
In the second phase, I took responsibility for the technical deliverables including CAD models, circuit diagrams, and most importantly the rendering of the final product. This includes the still on these pages and the animations in the final video.
Prototyping
The project involved a lot of digital and physical prototyping. With a large prototyping budget, we experimented with many different LEDs and diffusive materials to create various effects. Based on the CAD, we 3D printed several elements and constructed a 1:1 prototype of the Lexus LS door with fully functioning lights, touchscreen, and haptics.
The Result
In total, 4 different effects combine to create the AURA experience visible in the renders. Velocity lights diagonally across the door panel that adapt their speed to the driving speed. The accent panel glows dynamically similar to the velocity lights. Contour lighting enhances the atmosphere of the interior and new haptic touchscreens on the armrest allow full control and customization.
